Computational science involves the use of tools for computing, interaction, and imaging in the process of scientific research. Important parts of the process to be supported are modeling and simulation of phenomena, and interpretation of data resulting from measurements and simulations. In this paper we present tools for visualization, numerical modeling, and computational steering. These tools were specifically developed for the analysis of light scattering data from the Venus project, to get insight in the structure and dynamics of the Venus atmosphere. Both aspects of the Venus atmosphere are very complex, and do not lend themselves to a routine analysis. Hence, this case is highly stimulating for the development of new computational science tools and techniques, as well as their integrated application. Measured data from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter were restructured and processed for visualization. Cloud features were extracted, tracked in time, and visualized using iconic techniques. The light scattering simulation model of the Venus atmosphere was adapted for use in an interactive environment, which could be achieved by restructuring for parallel processing. A computational steering environment (CSE) was used for interactive exploration of the model parameters, for comparative analysis and matching of simulated and measured data. We present results of these three tools achieved within the Venus project, and we develop some prospects for future development.
